Ideally, whenever you have to move, you have enough time to plan everything carefully and well ahead of time. But as we all know, life doesn’t always work out that way! Sometimes things come up and you find yourself having to make a move in a big hurry. It can be hard to know where to start and to make sure you don’t forget anything critical. We’ve seen it happen enough that we decided to put together this guide to moving with short notice.
Lists are great for any move, but they are especially important when you have a lot to do in a short amount of time. The very first list you make should be of all the tasks that need to be done in advance of and during your move. Your second list should be of all the important contacts involved in your move, from your moving company to your new place of employment or landlord. Additional lists will help keep track of important items.
This is easily the most lengthy process involved in moving, so it’s best to get started as soon as possible. Start by packing items you use less frequently and work your way up to the things you can pack closer to the day. Because you will be in a hurry, it’s especially important to make sure your boxes are well labeled and try to maintain a master list of boxes and their general content. This will help you ensure nothing gets lost in the move.
Get Lots of Help
When you have lots to do in a short amount of time, that’s the time you will be calling in favors from everyone around you. Friends and family are usually more than happy to lend a hand. From throwing a packing party to, most importantly, hiring helpful and experienced movers, many hands make for light work.
Clear Up Any Red Tape
Just like most things in life, there are lots of small, bureaucratic details with moving that can get lost in the mix. So make sure to keep all your important documents together in one safe place and keep them with you on moving day. And of course, don’t forget to change your address everywhere you need to. If your timeline is especially tight or you want to make sure you don’t forget anyone, consider setting up mail forwarding at your local post office or online.
