If there is one thing that human beings are universally good at, it’s accumulating junk. We can make emotional attachments to even the most mundane of things, and we’d rather horde than throw stuff into the trash.
The problem is, we end up with so much ‘stuff’ that it eats into our living space. It’s best on some occasions to throw out the junk, and if you are moving then you are giving yourself the perfect opportunity to declutter.
When it comes to a choice of keeping it or trashing it, you need to go through each item you own and ask yourself a few pertinent questions:
Does it have great sentimental value?
True, you would shudder in horror if you were forced to throw away some items. If something genuinely inspires you deep down emotionally then, by all means, keep it.
How often do you use it?
Be honest with yourself – do you use a particular item, or are you keeping hold of it because you think it might be useful one day? If it’s an item you do use regularly, then keep it. If you can’t actually remember when you used a particular item, then into the trash pile it goes!
Does it work?
Well, this sounds like a no-brainer, doesn’t it? Why hold on to something that does not work? People do tend to hold on to broken items that they used in the past, with the idea that one day, they will get around to fixing it. If you haven’t fixed it by now though, the chances are that you never will, so go ahead and pitch it.
Are you holding onto items that have seen their better days?
We all create junk in our lives to remind us of the bad times, as well as the good. Perhaps you’ve kept letters (remember them?) from an ex-partner who left you and has now remarried, or photos or other keepsakes. Ask yourself why you are holding onto them, and if you cannot come up with a logical reason as to why then leave them behind where they belong – in your past.
